Besides scaling the node and node label size are there other ways to hide nodes, links etc. in the schematic view if it becomes too cluttered?
If an area / project can be broken down into smaller more manageable areas can these be linked to a master / overall area under one node (and the information be recalled from the smaller areas)?

WEAP cannot be broken down into smaller areas without limiting the scope of analysis, but you can do a lot of framing with the zoom button in the Schematic view and also the Data view.
To make your map less cluttered, I would start by making the nodes smaller, as you said. You can also hide types of objects on the map by checking on unchecking the boxes to the left of the element names (river, diversion, reservoir, etc.). I recommend leaving rivers and some type of GIS map layer for spatial reference. Note that whatever you hid from the Schematic view will remain hidden in the Data view. You can hide and unhide objects at any time in the Schematic view.
