I am working on a small catchment of about 1200km2 in Kenya and I am using weap to asses the impact of water development projects in a water stressed catchment. However not consistent data is available, I would like to simulate the demand but the only information I have is the water abstraction permits, I would like some advice on how to represent this in weap as demand.

Hi Eric,
One way would be to lump the permit volumes and apply a node at the outlet of the catchment. Or if the coordinates are available for each permit, they could be placed at their approximate location in WEAP as the exact locations would not make much difference since the WEAP setup is a schematic. However, the above can only be applied if an assumption is made that the actual abstraction equals to a certain fraction of the permitted abstraction volume if not the maximum or more. Perhaps a preliminary survey of a sample of the catchment users' demands could be looked at to get an idea of the amounts they abstract. All the best! Haji |
