Hello! A pretty basic (very basic question) please:

How should I input conductivity values on a monthly basis calculation? (soil moisture method)

Example. Sand conductivity = 5550 m/year
...for monthly analysis, should I introduce 462500 mm/month?

Would appreciate your guidance.
Thanks in advance!
Ms. Stephanie Galaitsi

Dear Patricia,

Conductivity is a complicated thing, but first a start at approximating it, number you have looks good (annual/12), although it's very high. But sand is very conductive. You can edit it as you're calibrating the model and see how that changes everything.

Dear Stephanie,

Thank you very much for the reply. Then I understand that conductivity may not mean what it looks like. It appears to be a parameter to calibrate rather than a parameter that can be estimated through physical information. Am I right?

Thanks again!

Dear Patricia,

Not knowing your data source for the conductivity, it is difficult to say. Lab results for sand conductivity measurements may be very different from results in the field, owing to impurities in the sand, regional aquitards, all sorts of possible reasons. Plus WEAP has two conductivities listed - root zone and deep, and one may have sand but not the other, but it may not be clear where the division is.

I would say start with the data you have - knowing that it is quite a high number - and then include conductivity in your calibration as you try to improve your model fit.
